- -
- To recognise that it has other industries such as agriculture, here long before the timber industry, environmental tourism, Aboriginal cultural history, healthy life-style industry. Get rid of the timber industry and its lobbyists
- Selling the area to the tourists. More made of the feature of the lyrebird such as a large lyrebird built in the church garden park or in the centre of the main intersection.
- Organised groups & transport to take children to Orbost or Bombala for activities / sport / art etc and transport in general. Training for tourism ventures & small business in town
- We have 3 industries - not 1. Farming, tourism, timber. Timber is on the "down curve" - tourism is only 6 months at best. We need another industry or 2 to bridge the gaps.
- To shut down all loggin / chipping etc. activities
- Alternate industry. Need to produce something

- -
- There are 3 different ways to EXIT the town
- peace and quiet
- Remoteness / unspoiled countryside. Real fair dinkum people
- Trees, down to earth people, clean air, water, scenery, quietness
- -
- Its natural beauty currently being spoilt by the timber industry and narrow-view politics. The history - Aboriginal & early settler families.
- Farms, hills, tall trees and ferny gulliles, Closeness to the coast. Bird life.
- The beauty, the closenit community, the beaches
- Goog climate, fresh air - safe environment 5 degree warmer than Melbourne in Autumn / Winter. Access to local National Parks - Beach and Bush walks.
- We live in a beautiful environment, unfortunately it is being destroyed by greed
- The creativity that is part of my work.
- Fresh air & a feeling of freedom (real or otherwise)
- What do you think our greatest strength is?
- Our people
- The natural environment
- Locals who are patriotic about living in Cann River & young individuals who are offering and suggesting ideas to make some changes. Tourism is another strength which could blossom if transport access is available & widely promoted.
- Location, wilderness
- Our diverse range of people and our natural assets
- being a junction of highways
- We have lots to offer here nice place to live Bush Beach etc.
- Our naturally beautiful rivers, mountains, etc.
- Our water
- There is none
- Since the old people have passed on I don't believe there is any strength left.
- I don't know
- The gas stations
- I don't know
- -
- No idea
- -
- The people. Location. The road traffic will increase 2-fold in the couple of years, we should plan for it.
- Our environment, our placement on main highways & heart of wilderness destination for eco-tourism, our people
- -
- The natural beauty and peace of the area - this must be retained - not spoilt by chain-saws, log-trucks, smoke from burning the area
- (Farms, hills, tall trees and ferny gullies, Closeness to the coast. Bird life) Quaint church in centre of town. We are small enough in number to know most others and care for / look out for others.
- Tourism, Tourism Tourism. People pay lots to go on organised tours (ocean, Bush, river) train people up we have a future in more than saw logs & pulp
- Location, location, location. Cann River is strategically located at the junction of Princes Hwy & Monaro Hwy. Halfway between Sydney and Melbourne - and 3 hrs from Canberra.
- Our natural environment
- Forests and coastal areas
- Our isolation, our community
- What do you think our greatest weakness is?
- Our lack of confidence
- The tyranny of distance
- Isolation and [the rise] in fuel prices & grocery; selective population who are afraid of change & confronting our economical, social & environmental problems head on.
- People's attitudes, not moving forward
- Complacency, lack of cohesiveness. Work left to the same few, lack of willingness to cater especially for youth of the area
- To many people not working
- More for the kids to do at weekend; Too many (single) person living on own; not enough getting together; don't need too many commitee (?), more (activities) to put on like sport, dancing for middle age people, trips away
- Isolation, poverty, lack of direction, geographically scattered community. Tiny population.
- Tired attitudes
- drugs and alcohol
- When the old people's units are let out to rat-bags and drunks sure I would not want to live there
- Everything
- -
- I don't know
- No people
- The town's people
- not enough parking area and not enough shops
- Lack of resources and money. We need more things & shops for tourists to stop for.
- small town politics, empire builders, lack of community champions, a lack of vision
- Let's rip off a tourist attitude
- The all the eggs in one basket approach since the timber industry appeared in the 1950s. That has caused our narrow-view development - it has retarded our progress.
- Not enough musical events
- Too few people do all the work to provide more services while the majority winges but doesn't help
- Outdated Vic Government policy papers in relation to our town profile is grossly outdated and a hinderance to growth of our town also Aust Bureau Statistics can be up to 5 years old.
- Still being focussed on destroying forests - Wake up Cann River! Forest are carbon soaks - get into the 21st Century!
- Not able to retain our younger people
- Our isolation, cost of fuel, small population
- What is our most pressing problem?
- Lack of employment options
- declining population
- The possibility of our mill closing down & people moving out of town finding work & recreational activities
- Lack of interests for youth
- Shifting from a timber focussed town to concentrate on growth areas relating to tourism and giving the youth of the area a sense of purpose. community need to be able to adapt to change. Lack of employment.
- No work. Too many people don't want to work.
- Not enough jobs, or things like housing. Getting more active things to keep going. Petrol too dear, also shopping here too dear.
- Lack of direction, Splinter groups not working together. Lack of money, lack of enthusiasm, jaded / tired attitudes.
- Keeping people here and sustaining that population with our own produce
- Unmarried mothers not caring for their kids they get paid to look after the children but spend the money buying and selling drugs
- Drugs and drinking and there is nothing done about it also people abusing the tax payers
- No shops
- No one cares
- Not having a swimming pool
- No people
- The whole area, and people
- Not enough people go through the town
- Getting Cann River recognised as a great revival town for tourists
- lack of community cohesion, economy which affects travellers
- -
- The timber industry and the narrow view of people who believe that it was the industry that set this place up - it was not - family-owned farms, timber mills and mining started this area.
- With Cann River being at the junction of 2 major highways it would be good if we could have something special for the motoro cyclists who drive through - a special event
- Not enough diversity & future for children (work force). No culture (music / arts) to expose children too. No organised sport / dance etc groups. Transport from outlying communities to town.
- More industry, mor jobs for residents to make our town flourish
- Our town is being used as a low socio-economic drop point. Fix it.
- Highways are old and out of date for modern day traffic that is around now.
- Job opportunities
- Any suggestions on how to solve it?
- Start a series of small industrial hemp based industries
- More jobs - particularly in forest & resource management & maintenance
- Re-localization. Make good uses of our resources e.g. use timber to make furniture & may even turn into bio-diesel. Grow vegeations that will help supply the source of making biodiesel -> algae is one of the solutions. Implement solar panel to community centre not onlyh to save costs but also allowing drive pass tourists to know we are environmentally conscious people / town.
- Better attitudes, people doing things
- Streamline committees, and start working towards some common goals & themes. Events to put Cann River on the map i.e. Bruthen Blues Festival, Bombala Bike Show, Mallacoota Arts Festival are some examples that have worked.
- Some saught of industries to be bought in to the area "menning", factorys, tourism
- Don't know answer. Try and get more people with some new idea for our community (same people on committee). For future generation jobs.
- If I knew I'd have done something about it!
- Fruit tree group - vegie co-op. - local produce; old car collection & exhibit - enhance tourism - support local artists; resource networking - waste recycling back into community; historic trail - tourism - local interest; overview of what current resources are and where situated with the catchment area; group skills and people together to brainstorm industry ideas
- Stop all dole bludgers coming into the town unless they intend to work
- Stop letting so many dead beats entering the town. Just living and getting paid by Centrelink to keep dealing in drugs
- More shops
- -
- Get a swimming pool
- Get more people
- Leave
- Bring in some tourist pamphlets on what they can do in the area
- Set up Cann River as a very attractive "stop" centre for tourists passing through. Don't waste money trying to get them to stay. We need tourists just to stop for a break in travel. Don't expect them to stay.
- Make a community council with representatives from all community agencies, committees. This council could facilitate developing a united front to address problems / issues; Become self-sufficient and market our strengths
- Guided tours by National Parks staff; live exhibition centre (quolls, bandicoots, etc); town parks display boards of settlement history and natives tribes
- Get rid of the timber industry - especially the pulp and thinnings progress - use timber for fine artisans and promote the development of sustainable skilled artists and producers with true green credentials.
- -
- Local box (community) for events for children and adults so everyone has the opportunity to broaden horizons funding for tourism ventures / galleries / markets etc. & the training or communal galleries / co-ops for fresh fruit & veg market gardens etc.
- Create a higher education component and attach to Cann River p-12 college - e.g. animal husbandry, farm animals & native animals. Nursery, water / river plants, hydroponics, vegetables seeds, dehydrated food.
- Clean up town - raze old houses not up to standard. Embrace tourism - it is the only answer
- Build new dual lane highways (Princes and Monaro) and clean back on edges
- Have a sealed road to Point Hicks & advertise it as the significant historical site it truly is. Whilst selling the tourists Cann Valley produced biofuel & naturally grown food & produce from local market or acropolus
